Your vehicles timing belt is a heavy duty rubber belt with evenly spaced out groves. The belt is mounted to a set of gears with the same grove pattern as the belt. The main purpose of the belt is to make sure the timing  of the engine remains constant Most timing belts are dry belts, but there are exceptions.
